MASSAGE

According to Dr. Candace Pert, an internationally recognized pharmacologist, the benefits of massage are so great that
“We could replace 90% of mainstream medicine with a weekly massage”.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, said
“The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day”.

Effects of Massage

-Improve circulation
- Improves lymphatic drainage
- Soothes nerve endings
- Relieves tension
- Promotes relaxation
- Relieves aches and pains
- Aids joint mobility
- Aids restful sleep
- Nourishes skin
- Decrease blood pressure
- Aid the production of endorphins (happy hormones).

Numerous studies have been carried out to show the beneficial effects of therapeutic touch and conversely lack of touch can lead to a feeling of separation and anxiety.

You are never too old to receive massage – my oldest client is 93, she has a weekly massage of her knees, hands and back and has done so for the last 3 years.

Conditions which I have treated with massage include working for the MS Master Centre treating those with MS and their carers, arthritis, stress, stiff neck.

AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy involves the use of aromatic essential oils, taken from plants , trees, flowers, spices, fruits and herbs, to promote health of body and mind.

The use of oils goes back many years. The baby Jesus was given Frankincense and Myrrh. Evidence from the foot of the Himalayas suggests that people were distilling oils over 4,000 years ago.

Today Aromatherapy is enjoying a revival. The most widely used application of aromatherapy is probably through the medium of massage. Essential oils exert their therapeutic effect through the sense of smell but also through their absorption via the skin.

I am always trying to develop my massage techniques and as well as learning Swedish Massage and Aromatherapy Massage I have also studied Sports techniques and more recently the No Hands massage which uses the forearms to massage. This technique brings a greater degree of softness to the massage as the fleshy part of your forearm is particularly soft.

“Why not take care of this body, which is the receptacle of our soul, so that it may remain as healthy, strong and perfect as possible…” Paracelsus.

What happens during an Aromatherapy Massage

You will be shown the treatment room which will hopefully feel calming and relaxing. A free consultation then needs to be taken. This consultation is totally confidential.
The Aromatherapist will first of all want to take down a few details such as your name, address and so on. Any medical conditions you may have will be recorded so as to make sure it is suitable for you to receive a massage. Together we will look at some essential oils which will be beneficial to use. Having chosen the oils, these will then be blended into a carrier oil to use for a massage.

Many people choose to have just a back neck and shoulder massage, which generally lasts about 45 minutes….

Others prefer to have a full body massage, which lasts about an hour….

Still others, who may be more infirm, may just want a hand massage or a foot massage….
the choice is up to the individual but initially you may want to be guided by the therapist.

Some people choose to have a treatment once a week, others once a fortnight, others once a month. It is recommended that at the very least you need to have a massage once a month so that the benefits are cumulative.

Home Use of Essential Oils

If you wish, the therapist can assist you with ways in which you might like to use oils at home, such as in the bath, as a room vapouriser, in a compress and so on. These ways will help extend the effect of your aromatherapy treatment.

Conditions which may benefit from Aromatherapy.

All stress related conditions would benefit from the use of aromatherapy. There may be some contra-indications which the therapist will discuss with you.

BOWEN

The Bowen Technique originated in Australia where it was developed by Tom Bowen ( 1916-1982 ). Tom Bowen was not trained as a therapist but he had a really keen eye for seeing where there was some sort of imbalance in the body and knowing intuitively what to do to correct it. He was in his 40’s before he opened a full time clinic and by 1978 was treating 13,000 people a year.

Tom reckoned on an 85% success rate, most people having just one to three treatments. Tom only taught a handful of men his technique and then only teaching them 10% of what he knew.

I have trained with ECBS (the European College of Bowen Studies) and I am a member of BTER (the Bowen Therapists European Register). The latter ensures that I have reached a certain level of competence and I undergo CPD (Continuing Professional Development).

What Happens during a Bowen treatment?

Bowen is a holistic therapy in that it treats the whole body, physically, mentally and emotionally. It is a non-invasive treatment consisting of gentle moves over soft tissue and muscles, interspersed with periods of rest.

The beauty of Bowen is that it is suitable for everyone, from the newborn, to pregnant mums, to those who may be terminally ill, to the elderly. Bowen can treat chronic and acute conditions.

Treatment can be performed on the skin or through light clothing, so there is no need to undress.

More than one condition may be treated at once, so for example, you may present with a bad back and asthma, which can both be treated during the one treatment.

Ideally it is recommended that you have three treatments initially each one a week apart. Then a maintenance programme may be suggested of having a treatment once every 6-8 weeks. However in some cases only one treatment may resolve the problem. Some conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, .may require ongoing treatments

The technique is deceptively simple and uses very light touch to produce remarkable results and relaxation.

Treatment generally lasts between 45 minutes to an hour.

Bowen is suitable for a wide range of conditions. Conditions that have responded positively include:-
